Messages can remain unread for several reasons:

for example, the user does not currently have a subscription, that means he can't read your message; or the user has not visited the site since you sent the message; or the user does not want to read the message for personal reasons.

Please, pay attention to when the user you´re sending a message to was last time on the website. Also in the ¨Profiles Search¨ section you can set a filter to search for profiles of users online (currently on the site) or users who have been on the site recently (within a week).
